Inspired by Pauline Oliveros’ story of using her first recording machine to recording the street sounds from her bedroom window, The Invention of Listening was created from meditations recorded from my bedroom window during a quarantine from 12.2.21 to 18.2.21. The meditations were used as inspiration for multi-layer improvisation in which each layer is created by only listening to the recorded meditation. The cello sounds never interact with each other until all of the layers have been recorded.
